Amazon’s onboarding looks simple from the outside and then asks for a notarized utility bill three days in. This is the actual sequence — what to have ready, what trips most sellers, and how to land on the right plan.
Who this is forFounders or operators registering a new Amazon seller account for a US or international LLC. If you already have a personal Amazon account, you can reuse the email but the seller side is fully separate. Most rejected applications fail on verification, not the application itself.
What you'll need
Step 1
Individual ($0.99/sale) is for fewer than 40 units/month. Professional ($39.99/mo) is mandatory if you want ads, Brand Registry, or Buy Box eligibility.

Individual plan: no monthly fee, $0.99 per item sold, no access to Amazon Ads, no Buy Box eligibility, no bulk listing tools. Realistic only for clearing out inventory under 40 units/month.
Professional plan: $39.99/month flat, unlimited listings, eligible for Buy Box, eligible for Amazon Ads (PPC), eligible for Brand Registry. Anyone treating Amazon as a real channel needs Professional.
Math check: 40 units/month × $0.99 = $39.60. Past 40 units, Professional is cheaper AND unlocks every monetization lever. If you have any doubt, pick Professional.
You can downgrade once per 90 days. Upgrading is instant.
Step 2
Amazon verifies your legal name, address, bank, and tax ID before activating the account. Mismatches between any of these = rejection.
Amazon cross-checks four data points: legal business name, primary contact name, business address, and bank/credit card billing name. ALL FOUR must agree.
Get your formation document (Articles of Organization for LLC, Articles of Incorporation for corp) ready as a PDF.
Pull a recent bank statement showing the business name + the account number Amazon will deposit into. Last 90 days only.
Pull a utility bill or rental agreement dated within 180 days, showing the registered business address.
For international sellers: passport (not driver license) as the ID. Local equivalents are rejected ~40% of the time.
Most rejections happen because the address on the utility bill is a P.O. box. Amazon needs a physical street address.
Step 3
Application has six sections: Business → Seller → Billing → Store → Verification → Identity. Each must be 100% consistent.
Section 1 — Business info: business location (country of registration), business type (Privately-owned, State-owned, Listed, Charity), and business name EXACTLY as on formation document.
Section 2 — Seller info: primary contact, residential address (NOT business address — Amazon wants where you actually live), date of birth, and a national ID.
Section 3 — Billing: a chargeable credit card in the same legal name. Prepaid cards rejected. Debit cards rejected. Must be a real credit card.
Section 4 — Store: the store name buyers will see. Keep it brand-safe — changing it later requires a support case.
Section 5 — Verification: upload formation document, bank statement, utility bill. Filenames matter — use "BusinessName_BankStatement_2026-05.pdf" not "scan-1.pdf."
Section 6 — Identity: live video selfie (yes, Amazon requires this in 2026). Take it in good lighting, hold the ID next to your face.
Step 4
After approval, Amazon runs you through a tax interview (W-9 for US, W-8BEN for non-US). Skip this and your payouts freeze at $50K.
Go to Seller Central → Settings (gear top-right) → Account Info → Tax Information.
US sellers: W-9. Enter EIN (for LLC/corp) or SSN (for sole prop). The name MUST match your IRS records exactly — including capitalization and punctuation.
Non-US sellers: W-8BEN (individual) or W-8BEN-E (entity). If your country has a US tax treaty, claim the treaty benefit to reduce withholding from 30% to 0-10%.
After submission, Amazon validates against IRS records in 24-48 hours. Status will show "Validated" or "Pending Review" in Tax Information.
If status stays "Under review" for more than 7 days, your name on the W-9 doesn’t match your EIN registration. Open a support case to get the exact mismatch.
Step 5
Amazon needs a bank account that matches the legal entity. Currency conversion (ACCS) costs 1.5% — third parties like Wise/Payoneer are 0.4%.
Settings → Account Info → Deposit Methods.
US sellers: use a US business bank account (Chase, Mercury, Relay, etc.). Personal accounts get flagged.
Non-US sellers: open a Wise Business or Payoneer account in USD. Amazon ACCS converts at ~1.5% above mid-market — Wise/Payoneer convert at ~0.4%. On $100K/yr in payouts, that’s $1,100 saved.
Add the bank account, then verify with two micro-deposits (Amazon sends $0.01 + $0.02 within 2-3 days, you confirm the amounts).
Disable any "Hold for review" flag once verified, so your first sale’s payout actually arrives.
Step 6
Lock down the account before launching listings. Amazon won’t restore a compromised seller account.
Settings → Login Settings → 2-Step Verification. Use an authenticator app (Authy, 1Password, Google Authenticator) — NOT SMS, which is exploitable.
Add a backup phone number and a recovery email. If you ever lose your auth app, Amazon support will demand these.
Settings → Notification Preferences → enable email alerts for: Listing Suppression, Account Health, Performance Notifications, A-to-z Guarantee Claims.

Common mistakes
Using a P.O. box or virtual mailbox as business address
What goes wrong: Amazon rejects the utility bill at verification and the account sits in "Under review" for 4-6 weeks. You can’t list during this time — every week of delay is real opportunity cost (estimated $500-2,000 for a launching brand).
How to avoid: Use a real physical street address. If you’re fully remote, register an Earth Class Mail or iPostal1 address that provides a street format (not a P.O. number) AND can issue a notarized verification letter.
Picking Individual plan to "test the waters"
What goes wrong: You can’t run Sponsored Products, can’t win Buy Box, can’t enroll in Brand Registry. Most "test" listings get zero sales because they’re invisible. After 90 days you upgrade — but now you’ve burned the listing-velocity window Amazon gives new ASINs.
How to avoid: Start on Professional ($39.99/mo). The Buy Box and Sponsored Products access is worth 10-50x the plan fee even in month 1.
Mismatched names across formation doc, bank, and W-9
What goes wrong: Amazon flags the account for "identity verification" — payouts freeze, listings get suppressed. Resolving this takes 3-8 weeks of support cases. One client we saw lost $14K in Q4 sales while their account was frozen for a missing Inc. on the bank statement.
How to avoid: Pre-flight: write out the legal name across every document (formation, bank, credit card, W-9, utility bill). If even one has "LLC" vs "L.L.C." or a missing comma, fix it BEFORE applying. Banks will reissue a statement with the corrected name.
Skipping the tax interview after approval
What goes wrong: Amazon withholds 28-30% of every payout once you cross $20K/yr until the tax interview is complete. On a $100K seller, that’s $30K sitting in Amazon escrow for months.
How to avoid: Settings → Account Info → Tax Information. Complete within the first week of approval. Status must say "Validated" — not "Pending."
Using SMS-based 2-step verification
What goes wrong: SIM-swap attacks are real on Amazon — a known threat actor pattern is to take over the seller account, change payouts, and drain $20-100K in pending payments before you notice.
How to avoid: Settings → Login Settings → 2-Step Verification → switch from SMS to an authenticator app (Authy, 1Password). Add 2 backup methods so you don’t lock yourself out.
