What you'll need
Step 1
Google Docs → Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons → search 'Clearscope' → Install → authorize. Use the SAME Google account that owns your Clearscope subscription.
Open any Google Doc. Top menu → Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons.
Search 'Clearscope' in the Workspace Marketplace. Click the official Clearscope, Inc. add-on (verify publisher — there are knockoffs).
Click Install → Continue → authorize with your Google account. CRITICAL: use the same Google account that owns the Clearscope subscription, otherwise authentication fails silently.
Grant the requested permissions (read/write current doc, network access to clearscope.io). The add-on needs all of these.
After install, refresh the Google Doc. The Clearscope sidebar should be available under Extensions → Clearscope → Open sidebar.
Step 2
Open the doc → Extensions → Clearscope → Open sidebar → 'Connect a report' → paste report URL or pick from list. Each doc connects to ONE report.
Open the Google Doc you want to write in. Extensions → Clearscope → Open sidebar (or click the sidebar icon if already open).
Click 'Connect a report.' You can either paste a Keyword Report URL or pick from your recent reports list.
Once connected, the sidebar shows: current grade, word count vs target, recommended terms (with usage counts), and outline suggestions.
Each Google Doc connects to exactly one Keyword Report. To re-target a doc, disconnect the current report and connect a different one.
Step 3
Type 100+ words → check sidebar updates. Grade should update within 5-10 seconds. If frozen, the add-on lost its connection — refresh the doc.
Test the integration: type 100+ words of placeholder text in the doc.
Watch the sidebar. Grade should re-calculate every 5-10 seconds (or on every save in older versions).
If the grade doesn't update: refresh the Google Doc (CMD/CTRL + R), the sidebar should reconnect.
If still frozen after refresh: Extensions → Clearscope → Disconnect → Connect again. This force-resyncs the auth token.
Step 4
WP Admin → Plugins → Add New → search 'Clearscope' → Install + Activate. Then Settings → Clearscope → paste API key.
Log into WordPress admin → Plugins → Add New.
Search 'Clearscope'. Install + Activate the official Clearscope plugin (publisher: Clearscope, Inc.).
After activation, go to Settings → Clearscope. You'll be prompted to paste an API key.
Get the API key from your Clearscope account: Settings → Integrations → WordPress → Generate API Key. Copy and paste into the WP settings.
Save settings. The plugin now adds a Clearscope sidebar to the Gutenberg editor when you open a post.
Step 5
WP post editor → Clearscope sidebar (right rail or document settings) → 'Connect report' → paste report URL or pick from list.
Open the WP post in Gutenberg editor. The Clearscope sidebar appears in the right rail (or via Document Settings menu).
Click 'Connect a report.' Paste a Keyword Report URL or pick from your recent reports list.
The sidebar shows the same data as Google Docs: grade, word count, recommended terms, outline.
Save the post. The connected report persists — when you re-open the post next week, the sidebar is still attached.
Step 6
Document team SOP: every article writes in EITHER Google Docs OR WordPress, never both for the same article. Switching loses grade tracking.
Picking both Google Docs AND WordPress for the same article is the most common cause of 'grade tracking broken.' Each install has its own state; the two diverge.
Team SOP: assign one editing surface per article at brief time. Google Docs is the default for editorial review cycles; WordPress for direct-to-CMS workflows.
If a writer needs to move from Google Docs to WordPress (e.g., after review), the move happens ONCE at publish time, not mid-draft.
Audit the team monthly: are any articles being drafted in both surfaces simultaneously? If yes, the SOP isn't being followed.

Letting old reports accumulate without disconnect
