Forms and landing pages are how Kit grows. Templates are easy; the conversion-grade setup — incentive email, tag-on-subscribe, success URL, embed placement — is where 80% of DIY builds lose 30-50% of capturable signups.

What you'll need
Step 1
Forms embed inside your site. Landing pages are standalone Kit-hosted URLs. Use both — they serve different traffic sources.
Kit → Grow → Landing Pages & Forms → + New.
Form types: Inline (embedded into a blog post or page), Modal (popup), Slide-in (corner box), or Sticky bar. Each has a different placement strategy.
Landing Page: a standalone URL on kit.com (or your custom domain via Kit Pro). Use these for paid traffic, podcast show notes, and link-in-bio.
Recommendation for a standard setup: 1 inline form (on blog posts) + 1 modal popup (timer-based) + 1 landing page (for off-site links). That covers 90% of traffic sources.
Don't build 8 forms day one. Start with these 3, see which converts, then expand.
Step 2
Kit → Grow → + New → choose 'Form.' Pick a template, set the headline + incentive copy, and configure the incentive email delivery.

Pick a template. The "Mills" or "Bevy" inline templates work for blog embeds. "Clare" is the cleanest modal.
Edit headline: name the deliverable specifically. "Get the 12-page Notion template" beats "Subscribe to my newsletter" by 2-4x on conversion.
Edit fields: email only (default). DO NOT add a "name" field — every field added drops conversion 8-15%. Capture name later via a custom property in a follow-up email if needed.
Settings tab → Incentive: toggle ON → upload the PDF or paste the link. Kit will email it after confirmation. Subject + body of the incentive email is editable — customize it (the default is generic).
Settings → Subscribed: turn ON "Send incentive email" + set "Redirect to an external page" with a thank-you URL you control. The thank-you page is where you can add a tripwire offer or social CTA.
Step 3
Every form must tag the subscriber with their source. Without this, you can't segment broadcasts by where they came from later.
Open the form → Settings → Incentive → Automations.
Add automation: "Subscribes to form X" → "Add tag: source:lead-magnet-name."
Add another: "Subscribes to form X" → "Add tag: interest:topic-A" (pick the topic this lead magnet covers).
Save. Now every subscriber from this form is tagged with where they came from AND what they're interested in. That's the gateway to segmented broadcasts later.
Repeat for every form. If you have 5 forms, you should have 5 source tags + 2-5 interest tags applied automatically.
Step 4
Kit → Grow → + New → choose "Landing Page." Single-purpose URL. Use this for paid traffic, podcasts, and link-in-bio.

Pick a template. 'Bay' and 'Soto' are clean, conversion-focused options.
Headline: same rule — name the deliverable specifically.
Hero image: high-res, on-brand. Photos of the actual lead magnet (3D book mockup, screenshot of template) outperform stock photos 2-3x.
URL: under Settings → Page address → pick a slug (yourname.kit.com/your-magnet). Kit Pro lets you map to a custom subdomain (download.yourname.com).
Apply the same source + interest tags as in step 3.
Publish. Open the URL in incognito to confirm rendering on desktop and mobile.
Step 5
Inline forms need an embed snippet. Modal/slide-in/sticky need either the snippet OR the Kit auto-injection script.
On any form → Embed tab → copy the JavaScript embed.
For inline placement: paste the snippet inside your blog post HTML (or use the WordPress Kit plugin, Webflow Embed component, Squarespace Code Block).
For site-wide modal/slide-in/sticky: paste the snippet in your site's `<head>` (once). Then set form triggers in Kit → Form → Display Settings.
Triggers worth testing: timer (4-8 sec is the sweet spot), exit intent (laptop/desktop only), scroll percentage (50% scroll trigger). NOT immediate — immediate popups underperform timer-based by 40-60%.
Display rules: 'Show on every visit' is aggressive. 'Show once per 7 days' is the sustainable default for return visitors.
Step 6
Redirect new subscribers to a thank-you page YOU control. Use that real estate for a low-friction tripwire offer or social follow.
Build a thank-you page on your own site (yourname.com/thanks).
Content: "Check your inbox in 2 minutes" + a 3-5 minute video introducing yourself + a low-ticket offer ($7-27 mini-product) OR a Twitter/Instagram follow CTA.
In Kit → Form → Settings → Subscribed → "Redirect to an external page" → paste the thank-you URL.
Tripwire conversion benchmarks: 3-8% of new subscribers buy. On a $19 product with 500 new subscribers/month, that's $285-760/mo of recovered list-acquisition cost.
Don't over-build day one. A simple "thanks, check your email + follow me on Twitter" page is fine. Add the tripwire in month 2 once you have signup volume.
Step 7
Subscribe yourself in incognito. Verify: incentive email arrives, tag applied, redirect works, subscriber appears in Kit.
Open your site in incognito. Find the form. Subscribe with a test email you control.
Confirmation email should arrive within 30 seconds (if double opt-in is on) — confirm the link.
Incentive email should arrive within 60 seconds of confirmation. Check the deliverable link works.
Thank-you page redirect should fire on submit.
In Kit → Subscribers → search the test email. Verify: the right tags are applied (source: + interest:), the subscriber is in the right segment, and lifecycle metadata is populated.
Re-test every form every 90 days. Embeds break when sites are redesigned and tagging silently breaks when forms are duplicated.
Common mistakes
Adding a "Name" field on the signup form
What goes wrong: Each additional field drops form conversion 8-15%. On a 1,000 visitors/month signup form, adding 'Name' costs you 80-150 subscribers/year.
How to avoid: Email-only form. Capture first name later via a 'reply with your name' follow-up email or a custom property survey at day 7.
Not tagging subscribers at the form
What goes wrong: Without source tags, you can't segment broadcasts by where subscribers came from. Six months in, you have 5,000 subscribers and no way to send 'Hey podcast listeners' or 'Hey readers from XYZ blog post' campaigns.
How to avoid: Every form → Settings → Incentive → Automations → "Add tag: source:[form-name]." 30 seconds per form. Compound value over years.

What goes wrong: You give up 100% of post-signup real estate to a generic 'Thanks, check your inbox' page on kit.com. That's worth $5-50 per new subscriber depending on niche.

Generic incentive email
What goes wrong: The default Kit incentive email is bland and lands in Promotions on Gmail. Subscribers don't open it, never download the lead magnet, and feel like the experience is "broken."
How to avoid: Customize the incentive email subject + body. Write it like a personal note, not a transactional receipt. "Here's your guide + a quick story" outperforms "Your download is ready" by 30-50%.
Immediate popup trigger (0 seconds)
What goes wrong: Visitors haven't seen your value prop yet. Popup fires before page render finishes; conversion runs 40-60% lower than timer-delayed popups.
How to avoid: Set modal trigger to 4-8 seconds OR 50% scroll depth. Both let visitors decide before the popup interrupts.
