Etsy SEO is not Google SEO. It's a closed-system marketplace where title-word order, attribute completeness, and sales velocity matter more than backlinks. Here's what actually moves listings to page 1.
Who this is forEtsy shops with 10+ listings and stable traffic that has plateaued. If your views are flat for 60+ days, this is the workflow to break out. Also relevant if you launched with thin tags and want to backfill 50+ listings systematically.
What you'll need
Step 1
Identify the 20% of listings driving 80% of views. These are where SEO work pays back fastest — and where missing tags cost the most.
Open Shop Manager → Stats. Filter to the last 30 days. Sort by Views descending.
The top 10 listings usually drive 60-80% of total shop views. These are your priority — they already have traction, so SEO improvements compound.
Pull the bottom 10 listings (lowest views). These are either dead products or SEO problems. If the product is healthy in other channels but dead on Etsy, it's an SEO problem worth fixing.
Cross-reference with conversion: a listing with 500 views and 0 sales has a fundamentally different problem than a listing with 5 views and 1 sale. Title/tag SEO fixes view counts; photos/pricing/description fix conversion.
Step 2
For each priority listing, pull 20-30 candidate keyword phrases sorted by search volume and competition. The goldilocks zone is medium-volume + low-competition.
Open eRank (or Marmalead, or Sale Samurai). Search a seed term related to your product, e.g., 'leather wallet.'
Pull 'Keyword Tool' or 'Keyword Explorer' data. Look at the columns: Etsy Searches (monthly), Etsy Competition (number of competing listings), and Average Click Rate.
Goldilocks keywords: 100-2,000 monthly searches, < 50,000 competing listings, click rate > 5%. These are findable AND winnable for a small shop.
Avoid keywords with 5,000+ monthly searches AND 200,000+ competition. Even with perfect SEO, your shop won't outrank established stores on these.
Build a list of 5-7 candidate phrases per listing. Stop there — you have 140 title characters and 13 tags to allocate.
Step 3
Front-load the most important keyword. Use 5-7 keyword phrases separated by | or commas. Don't waste characters on filler words like 'beautiful' or 'unique.'
Pattern: '[Primary Keyword] | [Secondary Keyword] | [Long-tail modifier] | [Material/Style] | [Recipient/Occasion]'
Example before: 'Beautiful Handmade Leather Wallet Perfect Gift'
Example after: 'Personalized Leather Wallet | Mens Bifold Wallet | Engraved Anniversary Gift | Handmade Cowhide | Groomsmen Gift'
Rules: 140-character max. Etsy weights words EARLIER in the title more — put your strongest keyword first. No keyword stuffing (don't repeat the same word 5 times). Capitalize first letter of each major word.
Avoid filler: 'beautiful,' 'unique,' 'amazing,' 'one-of-a-kind' — these add zero search volume and waste characters.
Step 4
Use ALL 13 tag slots, every one a multi-word phrase. Never repeat title words. Cover synonyms, recipients, occasions, and product variations.
Each tag is 20 characters max. Multi-word phrases beat single words — 'leather wallet for men' is 21 chars (cut to 'leather wallet men') and far stronger than just 'wallet.'
DON'T repeat words from the title — Etsy already counts those. Tags are for additional phrases that didn't fit in the title.
Cover these categories across your 13 tags: (1) product type synonyms ('bifold wallet,' 'card holder'), (2) style descriptors ('rustic leather,' 'minimalist wallet'), (3) recipients ('mens gift,' 'husband gift'), (4) occasions ('anniversary gift,' 'fathers day'), (5) materials ('cowhide,' 'full grain leather'), (6) personalization ('custom engraved,' 'monogrammed wallet').
Check tag effectiveness in Shop Manager → Stats → Search Terms. Tags that drive views are working. Tags with zero attributable views in 60 days need replacement.
Step 5
Attributes drive Etsy's search filters. Empty attributes = invisible to filtered searches. This is the highest-leverage 30-second fix on most listings.
Edit listing → scroll to Attributes section. Different categories have different attributes.
Common attributes: Primary color, Secondary color, Material, Style, Occasion, Holiday, Recipient, Pattern, Width, Length.
Fill EVERY attribute that applies — even ones that seem redundant with the description. Etsy uses these as filter facets in search results.
If 'Primary color' is empty and a buyer filters search results by 'Brown,' your listing doesn't appear — no matter how perfect your title is.
This is the single fastest-paying SEO fix. Most shops have empty attributes on 50%+ of listings. Fixing this on top 20 listings typically lifts views 15-30% in 30 days.
Step 6
Description doesn't affect ranking much, but it heavily affects conversion. A complete description converts 25-40% better than a sparse one.
Open with a 1-sentence product summary. Then bullet points: dimensions, materials, processing time, customization options, care instructions.
Add an FAQ section: 'How long does shipping take?' 'Can I customize?' 'Do you offer wholesale?' Preempt the questions that delay 'buy' decisions.
End with a paragraph about your shop, your process, and a call to view related listings (link to a section page).
Aim for 600-1,200 words. Buyers scroll long descriptions when they're seriously considering — short descriptions trigger 'is this real?' hesitation.
Avoid keyword stuffing in description. Etsy doesn't weight it for ranking; it's purely conversion. Write for the buyer.
Step 7
After a batch of optimizations, watch Stats → Search Terms for 30 days. New keyword traffic = SEO is working. Then optimize the next batch.
Shop Manager → Stats → Search Terms. After your edits, new tags should show up here within 14 days as Etsy crawls and indexes the updates.
Compare 30-day view counts before vs after for each edited listing. A 20-50% view lift is normal for well-optimized listings. Less than 10% lift means the keywords weren't right — re-research.
Conversion rate (sales/views) should stay flat or improve. If views go up but conversion drops, you targeted high-volume but irrelevant keywords. Tighten relevance.
Rinse and repeat: optimize the next batch of 10 listings every 30 days. Etsy rewards consistent freshness — slow-and-steady beats sporadic mass updates.
Common mistakes
Keyword stuffing the title with the same word 5 times
What goes wrong: Etsy's algorithm penalizes keyword repetition. 'Leather Wallet | Leather Wallets | Leather Wallet Men | Leather Wallet Personalized' ranks worse than the same title with varied phrases. You lose 30-50% of potential impressions to over-optimization.
How to avoid: Use the keyword once in the title; cover synonyms and modifiers in the remaining title phrases and tags. Variety beats repetition on Etsy.
Repeating title words in tags
What goes wrong: Etsy counts title words automatically — repeating them in tags wastes tag slots. You effectively have 5-7 unique tag phrases instead of 13, cutting your search surface area by 40-50%.
How to avoid: Tags should cover phrases NOT in the title. Synonyms, occasions, materials, recipients, variations.
Single-word tags
What goes wrong: Single-word tags like 'wallet' have impossible competition (millions of competing listings). Your listing never surfaces for them. Each single-word tag = a wasted slot.
How to avoid: Every tag should be a multi-word phrase, 18-20 characters. 'Leather wallet men' beats 'wallet' for findability.
Empty or partially-filled attributes
What goes wrong: Attribute filters drive 30-50% of Etsy search traffic. Empty attributes mean your listing is invisible when a buyer filters by color, material, style, etc. Fixing this is the single highest-leverage 30-second SEO action.
How to avoid: Fill every attribute on every listing. Material, primary color, secondary color, style, occasion, holiday, recipient.
Never updating titles or tags after listing
What goes wrong: Etsy rewards listing freshness with a small ranking boost after each edit. Shops that never update their listings lose this boost; competitors that re-tag monthly outrank them within 6-12 months.
How to avoid: Set a monthly cadence to update tags on the top 20 listings. Even small updates (swap one tag for a seasonal phrase) trigger the freshness boost.
Targeting only high-volume head terms
What goes wrong: A shop competing for 'leather wallet' (5M+ competing listings) against established brands never ranks. You spend hours optimizing for keywords you can't win, missing the 'low-volume, low-competition, high-intent' middle that small shops can dominate.
How to avoid: Pick keywords with 200-2,000 monthly searches AND <50,000 competing listings. These are the winnable ones. Aggregating 5-7 of these per listing beats chasing one big head term.

Hand it off
Optimizing 10 listings is a weekend. Optimizing 50+ listings and maintaining them monthly is a job. A vetted Etsy SEO specialist can rebuild your top 30 listings in 1-2 weeks at $14-16/hr — typically $600-1,200 for the project, $200-400/mo to maintain monthly freshness.

Etsy re-indexes edited listings within 24-72 hours. Ranking impact takes 7-14 days as the algorithm tests the new tags against query traffic. Full 30-day visibility cycle for measurable lift.
Etsy has historically weighted descriptions very lightly for ranking — title and tags do the heavy lifting. Description weight has increased gradually since 2024, so include relevant keywords naturally in the first paragraph. Don't keyword-stuff it.
eRank ($5.99-9.99/mo) is the most popular and has the deepest Etsy-specific data. Marmalead is similar quality, slightly pricier. Sale Samurai is the newer alternative. All three have free tiers — start free, upgrade when you outgrow it.
Yes — shop section names are indexed by Etsy search. Use category keywords ('Mens Wallets,' 'Anniversary Gifts') instead of generic ('Collection 1'). This is a 10-minute win most shops skip.
Partially. Etsy listing pages can rank on Google for long-tail product searches if the title and description are SEO-friendly. But Etsy's internal search is where 80%+ of your traffic comes from — optimize for Etsy first, Google second.
Etsy Shop Manager
Most makers launch an Etsy shop in 30 minutes and wonder why nobody finds it 6 months later. The shop name, the first 10 listings, and the policy pages set ceilings that are painful to lift later. Here's the version that actually compounds.

Most Etsy sellers don't realize they can put listings on Google Shopping two ways: via Etsy's Offsite Ads or via their own Merchant Center feed. The two have wildly different economics. Here's the full breakdown.
