If your views have flatlined or dropped, the cause is usually one of four things — not the algorithm being mysterious. Here's the diagnostic sequence a specialist runs in their first hour on the account.
Who this is forEtsy shops where views have been flat for 60+ days, OR shops that recently saw a 30%+ view drop with no obvious cause. Also useful if you launched listings 30+ days ago that have gotten under 100 views each.
What you'll need
Step 1
Open Shop Stats → 60-day view. Did views drop suddenly or have they always been low? The diagnostic path is different for each.
Shop Manager → Stats → 'Last 60 days' view. Look at the daily Views graph.
Pattern A — sudden drop: views were healthy, then dropped 30%+ within a 7-day window. Likely: algorithm update, policy flag, or competitive shift. Jump to Step 4.
Pattern B — gradual decline: views drifted down over months. Likely: listing freshness decay or product-market drift. Jump to Step 5.
Pattern C — never ranked: listings have always gotten under 100 views in their first 30 days. Likely: SEO basics never set up. Continue to Step 2.
Knowing which pattern you're in saves hours of misguided debugging.
Step 2
Open each top listing. Verify title structure, all 13 tags filled, all attributes filled, and category depth.
For each of your top 5 listings (or attempted-best listings):
Title: 100-140 characters used? Keyword front-loaded? 5-7 distinct phrases separated by | or comma?
Tags: ALL 13 filled? Multi-word phrases (not single words)? Not repeating title words?
Attributes: every available attribute filled (material, color, style, occasion, etc.)?
Category: most specific applicable category chosen (e.g., 'Mens > Wallets > Bifold' not just 'Mens')?
Photos: at least 8 photos, plus a video? First photo clean and recognizable as a thumbnail?
If 3+ of these are missing, your listings have never had a fair shot at ranking. Fix the basics first — Etsy SEO can't compensate for half-built listings.
Step 3
Etsy rewards listing freshness — new or recently-renewed listings get a temporary ranking boost. Old listings without edits decay over time.
In Shop Manager → Listings, sort by 'Date listed' (oldest first).
Listings older than 12 months that haven't been edited in 6+ months have decayed in ranking — Etsy's algorithm treats fresh signal favorably.
Fix: edit each old listing (add a new tag, swap a photo, update description) and save. This counts as a 'renewal' and triggers a 7-14 day ranking boost.
Counterintuitively: DON'T 'auto-renew' (paying the $0.20 listing fee for a fresh listing). That's a paid action; edits trigger the freshness signal without the fee.
Rotate edits monthly across your top 30 listings. Set a calendar reminder.
Step 4
Sudden 30%+ view drops are often caused by a policy flag — sometimes auto-detected without notification. Check Shop Manager → Settings → Policies.
Open Shop Manager → main dashboard. Look for any notification banners about policy violations, intellectual property reports, or 'limited shop' status.
Common silent flags: trademarked terms in listings (Disney, Marvel, etc.), 'best,' 'unique,' 'one-of-a-kind' over-use (sometimes flagged as misleading), commercial-use stock photos that look identical to others.
Check Shop Manager → Cases for any active disputes or A-Z claims.
Email yourself the support team if you suspect a silent flag (Help → Contact Support). Etsy sometimes throttles search visibility without sending notifications.
Resolution: if a flag is found, fix the violating listing(s), reply to Etsy support, wait 7-30 days for ranking recovery.
Step 5
Listings with low conversion (views but no sales) get progressively downranked. Listings with high conversion compound. Etsy rewards selling listings.
Pull Stats → Listings → 30-day Conversion rate per listing.
Listings with > 500 views and 0 sales in 30 days: Etsy is showing them but buyers aren't clicking through to buy. The fix is conversion-side — better photos, clearer description, competitive pricing.
Listings with < 50 views and any sales: high relative conversion. Etsy will gradually show these more. Don't touch — let them compound.
Listings with 100-500 views and 1-5 sales: healthy. Don't fix what's working.
Avg shop conversion rate by category benchmark (DTC handmade): jewelry 3-5%, home goods 2-4%, apparel 2-3%, prints/stickers 4-6%. If you're below benchmark, focus on conversion fixes (Step 6).
Step 6
If views are healthy but sales aren't, the issue is conversion: photos, pricing, reviews, or product-market fit.
Open your top listing on mobile (where 70%+ of Etsy shoppers are). Walk through it as a buyer would.
First photo: clear, recognizable, well-lit? Or yellow-tinted indoor lighting + cluttered background?
Price: in line with competitors? Above premium tier with no premium signals (e.g., charging $80 with no review history)?
Reviews: at least 5 reviews on the listing? Buyers strongly prefer listings with 10+ reviews.
Description: complete with dimensions, materials, care, processing time, FAQs? Or 50 words and a 'thanks for looking!'?
Trust signals: shop has 'About' section, real face on shop page, 4.5+ star average?
Each missing trust signal cuts conversion 10-20%. Stack 3-4 missing and you've cut conversion 40-60%.
Step 7
Create a brand-new listing with everything done correctly. If IT ranks fine while your old listings don't, you have shop-level vs listing-level issues.
Create a new listing for an existing product (you can copy from an existing listing as starting point).
Apply EVERY SEO basic correctly: optimized title, all 13 tags, all attributes, 8-10 photos + video, complete description, free shipping over $35.
Publish. Watch views for the next 14 days.
If the new listing ranks well (gets 200+ views in 14 days): your old listings have specific issues — go back and fix them one at a time.
If the new listing also doesn't rank: it's a shop-level issue — likely policy flag, shop history score, or chronic conversion rate. Escalate.
Common mistakes
Assuming Etsy algorithm changed when it didn't
What goes wrong: Sellers blame 'the algorithm' for performance drops that are actually fixable issues (decayed listings, policy flags, conversion problems). Months go by without action because the seller believes it's out of their control.
How to avoid: Diagnose specifically before blaming the algorithm. 90% of "algorithm" complaints are actually listing-level issues.
Renewing listings (paying $0.20) instead of editing
What goes wrong: Auto-renew costs $0.20 per renewal but doesn't trigger as strong a freshness signal as a real edit. You spend $50-100/year on renewals while still seeing decay.
How to avoid: Edit listings instead of renewing. Change one tag, swap a photo, update description. Etsy treats edits as fresh signal without the fee.
Not checking for policy flags during sudden drops
What goes wrong: Etsy sometimes silently flags shops for trademark issues, misleading claims, or other policy violations. Sellers spend weeks 'fixing SEO' when the actual issue is a hidden visibility throttle.
How to avoid: On any sudden 30%+ view drop, contact Etsy support FIRST to ask about any active flags or restrictions. Save weeks of misguided debugging.
Optimizing for clicks but not conversion
What goes wrong: You optimize a listing aggressively — better tags, broader keywords. Views go up to 1,000/mo but sales stay at 5/mo (0.5% CR). Etsy notices the bad conversion signal and starts under-serving the listing.
How to avoid: Watch CR alongside views. If views go up but CR drops, you targeted too broad. Narrow keywords to high-intent phrases.
Not testing with a fresh control listing
What goes wrong: Sellers spend weeks rebuilding old listings without confirming whether their SEO basics actually work. They might be making the same mistake across all listings.
How to avoid: Create one new listing with everything optimized perfectly. Use it as a control to test whether your SEO basics work. Then apply learnings to old listings.
Ignoring the mobile experience
What goes wrong: 70%+ of Etsy shoppers are on mobile. If your photos look bad on mobile (cluttered backgrounds, small details invisible) or your description is hard to scan on a small screen, you lose 30-50% of conversion.
How to avoid: Open every top listing on your actual phone. Walk through as a buyer. Photos: clear thumbnail? Description: scannable, with line breaks? Fix mobile-first.

Hand it off
Diagnosing 30+ listings is a 10-hour job. Fixing all of them is another 20-30 hours. A vetted Etsy specialist who has audited 100+ shops can pattern-match issues in minutes that take DIY sellers days. Typically $600-1,200 for a full audit + rebuild of top 30 listings at $14-16/hr.
See Etsy specialist rates
Within 24-72 hours, Etsy re-indexes the listing. Ranking boost typically appears within 7-14 days. The boost lasts 14-30 days, then ranking settles based on conversion performance.
Three usual causes: (1) hidden policy flag — check support cases and contact Etsy; (2) algorithm update — Etsy occasionally adjusts ranking weights; (3) competitive shift — new strong competitors entered your category. Diagnose specifically before assuming.
Yes. Etsy's algorithm uses conversion rate as a quality signal. Listings with 500+ views and 0 sales get progressively downranked. Fix the conversion-side issue (photos, price, reviews) — not the SEO.
Usually no — delete only if the product is permanently discontinued. Instead, edit and re-list (or 'renew') to refresh the listing. Even old listings can revive with new tags + new photos.
Monthly cadence on your top 20-30 listings. Small edits (swap a tag, update a photo) trigger Etsy's freshness signal without requiring a full rewrite.
Etsy Shop Manager
Etsy SEO is not Google SEO. It's a closed-system marketplace where title-word order, attribute completeness, and sales velocity matter more than backlinks. Here's what actually moves listings to page 1.

Etsy Ads are simple to enable and easy to lose money on. The default settings push budget at every listing equally — including the dead ones. Here's the setup that compounds instead of burning.

The Star Seller badge lifts conversion 10-20% and is checked monthly. Most shops miss it on ONE criterion — usually response time. Here's the operational playbook to hit all four and keep them.

Most Etsy sellers don't realize they can put listings on Google Shopping two ways: via Etsy's Offsite Ads or via their own Merchant Center feed. The two have wildly different economics. Here's the full breakdown.
