Later is the most opinionated visual scheduler on the market. Done right, your Instagram grid plans itself and Linkin.bio drives meaningful traffic. Done wrong, you'll burn an afternoon on IG Business-account confusion. Here's the clean install path.
Who this is forDTC brands, creators, lifestyle/fashion/food brands, and any operator whose social strategy leads with visuals (Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts). If LinkedIn or Twitter are your primary networks, Later is the wrong tool — pick Buffer or Hootsuite instead.
What you'll need
Step 1
Later tiers are gated on 'social sets' (one social set = up to 6 connected profiles, typically one per brand). Pick by brand count first, then user/feature needs.
Free plan: 1 social set, 1 user, 10 scheduled posts/network/month. Good for testing only.
Starter (~$25/mo): 1 social set, 1 user, 30 scheduled posts/profile/month. Right for solo creator or single small brand.
Growth (~$45/mo): 3 social sets, 3 users, 150 posts/profile/month, full Linkin.bio. Right for small agencies (3 brand clients) or multi-brand operators.
Advanced (~$80/mo): 6 social sets, 6 users, unlimited posts, full analytics + UGC tools. Right for established small agencies.
Agency (custom): 10+ social sets, advanced reporting, client-facing dashboards.
Pricing changes — check later.com/pricing for current.
Start on Starter or Free for testing; upgrade when scope is clear within 14 days.
Step 2
Sign up with a shared brand inbox, not personal Gmail. Enable 2FA immediately.
Go to later.com → Sign Up. Use a shared brand inbox (`social@yourbrand.com`).
Set a strong password. Enable 2FA in Profile → Security via authenticator app. NOT SMS.
Verify admin email via confirmation link.
The signup email is the Owner — only the Owner can change billing.
Step 3
Connect Facebook FIRST, then Instagram. TikTok, Pinterest, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts in any order.
Dashboard → Social Sets → Add Profile. Pick Facebook first.
Sign in as Page admin. Grant all permissions Later requests.
Once FB is connected, Later offers to connect the linked Instagram Business account. Confirm.
If Instagram fails: (a) IG is Personal account — convert to Business/Creator in IG app, link to FB Page. (b) FB Page admin status revoked — regrant.
Add TikTok Business — Later has strong TikTok integration including direct video publish.
Add Pinterest Business — Later treats Pinterest as a first-class network (one of few tools that does).
Twitter/X and LinkedIn: connect for cross-posting, but Later is weaker than Buffer/Hootsuite on these networks.
Add YouTube Shorts if relevant — Later supports YouTube Shorts publishing.
Step 4
Later's strength is its Media Library — your visual content lives here, then you drag-drop into the calendar. Upload your first batch before scheduling.
Media → Upload Media. Drag-drop or browse for photos/videos.
Bulk upload: select up to 100 files at once.
Later auto-detects file type (photo, video, carousel-ready).
Tag media as you upload: 'product-launch,' 'behind-the-scenes,' 'UGC,' 'evergreen.' Tags speed up later scheduling.
Aim for 30-50 pieces of media in your library at any time. Empty libraries = forgettable feeds.
Later integrates with Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Photos for direct import.
Step 5
Schedule → Best Times. Later analyzes your audience and suggests optimal posting times. Customize from there.
After 7-14 days of connected data, Later → Schedule → Best Times shows your audience's most active windows.
Configure 3-5 posting slots per day per network, aligned to your posting volume target.
Override Later's suggestions if your analytics show different windows.
Don't post on the hour — every brand schedules at 9:00 and 9:30. Slots at 9:07 or 9:23 land in less-crowded competition.
Set timezone per social set if you serve different regions.
Step 6
Later's mobile app is critical — Instagram Story scheduling requires the mobile app to push the final publish. Browser extension speeds up content capture.
Install Later mobile app (iOS/Android). Sign in.
Enable push notifications. Story scheduling requires Later notification → you tap to publish in IG.
Install Later browser extension (Chrome/Firefox/Edge). When you find share-worthy content, click extension → add to Media Library.
Bookmark Later dashboard. Calendar view is where you'll spend 80% of your time.
Step 7
Don't trust setup until publishing works. Schedule one low-stakes post per network 5 minutes from now.
Compose: simple square image + 'Testing Later setup — disregard.'
Pick all connected networks. Schedule for 5 min from now.
Watch the Calendar — each post should turn from yellow (pending) to green (published).
Common failures: IG aspect ratio out of bounds (use 1:1), TikTok video format invalid, LinkedIn requires text (image-only posts fail on Pages).
Delete test posts manually from each native network (Later's delete only removes from Later, not from the network).
Common mistakes
Signing up on Starter when you need Growth
What goes wrong: Starter caps at 1 social set. If you manage 2 brands, you hit a wall in week 2 and have to upgrade — losing some workflow setup in the migration. For agencies managing 5+ brands, picking the wrong tier costs 4-8 hours of rebuild + 1-2 weeks of slowed publishing. Direct cost: $200-400 in operator hours.
How to avoid: Count brands BEFORE signing up. 1 brand = Starter. 2-3 brands = Growth. 4-6 brands = Advanced.
Connecting Instagram as Personal account
What goes wrong: Same Meta API restriction as other schedulers. Posts queue but never publish. For DTC brands amplifying organic IG with $2-5K/mo Meta Ads, missed organic content directly hurts ad-driven conversion lift by 15-30%.
How to avoid: Convert IG to Business or Creator. Link to a Facebook Page. Reconnect in Later.
Empty Media Library at launch
What goes wrong: Later is visual-first — without a stocked Media Library, you'll spend 10-15 min per post sourcing visuals instead of dragging from library. For brands publishing 5-10 IG posts/week, that's 1-2 hours/week of friction = $100-300 in operator opportunity cost.
How to avoid: Upload 30-50 pieces of visual content BEFORE scheduling your first week.
No mobile app installed
What goes wrong: Instagram Story scheduling silently fails — Later notifies you when Story is ready to publish, but without the mobile app + notifications enabled, you never see the prompt. Story content accumulates in queue but never goes live.
How to avoid: Install Later mobile app on Day 1. Enable push notifications.
Using Later for LinkedIn-heavy strategy
What goes wrong: Later's LinkedIn support is weaker than Buffer or Hootsuite. If LinkedIn is 50%+ of your strategy, you'll hit feature gaps (LinkedIn-specific analytics, document/PDF post support, poll scheduling) and end up patching with native LinkedIn.
How to avoid: If LinkedIn is primary: use Buffer or Hootsuite. If Instagram/TikTok/Pinterest is primary: use Later.
No 2FA on the Later account
What goes wrong: Account compromise = attacker can publish to every connected network, change Linkin.bio links (redirecting traffic to malicious sites), or delete content. Brand-takeover incidents typically cost $5-20K in damage for brands with 50K+ followers — especially painful when Linkin.bio drives meaningful conversions.
How to avoid: Enable 2FA via authenticator app in Profile → Security on Day 1.

Hand it off
Later setup is one afternoon. Producing visual content that converts is a job. EverestX social media managers handle Later config + content production + monthly performance reviews. Engagements $400-1,200/mo at $14-16/hr depending on brand count + content volume.

Later wins on visual-first scheduling (Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest), best-in-class Linkin.bio, and visual calendar drag-drop. Buffer wins on simplicity + multi-network mix. Hootsuite wins on enterprise depth. For DTC/lifestyle/fashion/food: Later. For mixed strategy: Buffer. For enterprise: Hootsuite.
Yes — Later supports direct Reels publish on most plans. Stories: partial (Later notifies mobile app, you tap to publish). Carousels: yes, direct publish.
Three usual causes: (1) IG is Personal account — convert to Business/Creator. (2) FB Page admin status was revoked — regrant. (3) Image aspect ratio out of bounds — IG accepts 1:1, 4:5, 1.91:1.
Linkin.bio is Later's link-in-bio tool. The differentiator: it mirrors your IG grid — visitors tap any post in the visual grid and land on the URL you mapped to that post. Linktree is a simpler list-of-links page. For DTC/e-com brands monetizing IG, Linkin.bio typically converts 2-3x better.
Yes — Later was one of the first social tools with TikTok publishing. Supports direct video publishing (not just reminders), TikTok analytics, and hashtag suggestions tuned for TikTok.
Later
Later's visual calendar is the reason DTC brands pick this tool. Grid composition, color storytelling, drop-day planning — done right, your feed becomes a recognizable brand-builder. Here's the planning workflow specialists use.
Later
Most brands use the IG bio link to dump 5 links into Linktree and call it done. That's leaving 60-80% of potential conversion on the table. Linkin.bio mirrors your grid — every post becomes its own shoppable destination.
Later
Stories and Reels are where IG engagement actually lives in 2026 — and where most scheduling tools fall down. Here's the Later workflow that handles both formats reliably.
Buffer
Buffer is the cleanest, most opinionated social scheduler on the market. Done right, you'll have a posting cadence running inside 90 minutes. Done wrong, you'll hit Instagram OAuth purgatory and waste an afternoon. Here's the clean install path.
Later
Instagram is the most labor-intensive social network — visual production + cadence + Stories + Reels + DMs + UGC + influencer management. Done well, it's a brand-builder and revenue channel. Done DIY past a certain scale, it eats your week.
