Stories and Reels are where IG engagement actually lives in 2026 — and where most scheduling tools fall down. Here's the Later workflow that handles both formats reliably.
Who this is forBrands actively producing IG Stories or Reels content who want to stop manually posting at the right times. Especially DTC and creator brands where Stories drive Linkin.bio clicks and Reels drive top-of-funnel reach.
What you'll need
Step 1
Reels: direct auto-publish (no manual tap needed on most plans). Stories: notification reminder — Later pings your phone, you tap to publish in IG.
Reels auto-publish: Later supports this on Growth plan and above. Confirm by composing a test Reel and checking if 'Auto-publish' is an option.
Stories notification-reminder: Meta does NOT allow third-party direct Story publishing. Later sends a push notification to your phone at the scheduled time → you tap → IG opens with the pre-loaded media + caption → you tap 'Share to Story.'
Why the difference: Meta opened the Reels API for third-party publishing in 2022. Stories API remains gated to enterprise partners only.
If 'auto Story scheduling' is critical: no tool does it well. Hire someone to actually publish Stories manually at the right times.
Step 2
Install the app. Enable push notifications. Verify by scheduling a test Story 5 minutes ahead.
Install Later mobile app on the phone you check most.
Sign in. Settings → Notifications → enable all (Posts, Stories, Reminders).
iOS: also enable in iOS Settings → Notifications → Later → allow notifications, sounds, badges.
Android: app settings → ensure battery optimization isn't killing Later background processes.
Test: schedule a Story for 5 minutes from now. Wait. When notification fires, tap it. IG should open with media pre-loaded.
Step 3
Vertical 9:16 video, 3-90 seconds, MP4 format, under 1GB. Anything else fails or displays poorly.
Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical (1080×1920). Other ratios center-crop badly.
Length: 3-90 seconds. Reels under 3s fail; over 90s truncate.
Format: MP4 with H.264 codec. AAC audio. Variable framerate works but consistent 30fps is safer.
File size: under 1GB. Larger files fail upload silently or after timeout.
Caption: under 2,200 chars (same as feed posts). Hashtags max 30.
Cover image: select a strong first-frame or upload a custom 9:16 cover. Cover image is what appears in your IG grid — pick deliberately.
Step 4
Compose → upload video → select Reels → set time → publish. Most reliable Later workflow.
Later → Calendar → New Post → Reels.
Upload your vertical video.
Select cover image (auto-detected or custom).
Write caption + hashtags.
Schedule for optimal Reels time: evenings 7-10pm typically perform best on most accounts.
Click Schedule. Later auto-publishes at the scheduled time.
Verify after publish: open IG, confirm Reel is live + displaying correctly.
Step 5
Compose Story → set time → Later reminds you on mobile at scheduled time → you tap → publish manually in IG.
Later → Calendar → New Post → Story.
Upload your vertical image or video (9:16, similar specs to Reels).
Write caption (Stories show short captions or sticker text — keep brief).
Schedule for the time you want it live.
At scheduled time, Later sends push notification to your mobile app.
Tap the notification → IG opens with your media pre-loaded → tap 'Share to Story.'
Total time from notification to live: 10-30 seconds.
Step 6
Stories disappear in 24 hours. The brands winning on Stories post 3-7/day. Without a system, this becomes overwhelming. Batch-schedule per week.
Once per week, schedule the next 7 days of Stories in Later.
Mix content: 40% product/promo, 30% behind-the-scenes, 20% UGC/customer features, 10% polls/questions for engagement.
Set Stories to fire at 3 times per day (morning, midday, evening) for sustained presence.
Build in 'reaction time' — if a trending moment happens (industry news, viral moment), you can manually add a Story; the scheduled ones still fire on top.
Weekly review: did all scheduled Stories publish? If you missed notifications, set more aggressive notification settings.
Common mistakes
Disabled mobile notifications
What goes wrong: Stories silently fail to publish — you never see the notification, the Story never goes live. For brands depending on Stories for Linkin.bio traffic ($1-5K/mo for typical DTC), missing 50% of Stories halves Story-driven revenue trajectory.
How to avoid: Enable Later mobile notifications. Whitelist Later in iOS Focus modes. Set notifications to 'Banner' and 'Sound.'
Wrong aspect ratio for Reels
What goes wrong: 16:9 horizontal or 1:1 square Reels get center-cropped badly. Text/CTAs disappear. Engagement on poorly-displayed Reels drops 40-60%. For brands amplifying Reels with paid budget ($2-5K/mo), broken display halves ad efficiency.
How to avoid: Always 9:16 vertical (1080×1920). Pre-process before upload.
No Stories cadence
What goes wrong: Sporadic Story posting (3 per week vs. 3 per day) underperforms in IG algorithm. Story-frequent accounts get 40-60% more profile visits per week than Story-infrequent. For brands using Stories to drive Linkin.bio clicks, sparse Stories = sparse clicks.
How to avoid: Schedule 3-7 Stories/day, batched weekly. Mix content types. Maintain consistency for 30+ days before judging.
Treating Reels as just "video versions of feed posts"
What goes wrong: Reels need fast hooks (under 3 seconds), tight pacing, and platform-native style. Re-uploading a horizontal product video as a Reel produces flat performance. Reels engagement is 60-80% below platform benchmarks. For brands counting on Reels for top-of-funnel reach, weak performance starves the funnel.
How to avoid: Produce Reels-native content: vertical, fast-hook, platform-style. Don't re-purpose horizontal video.
Skipping cover image selection on Reels
What goes wrong: Reels with auto-selected first-frame covers often display poorly in your IG grid (text overlay, motion blur, mid-action frame). Profile-visit conversion drops as the grid looks cluttered. For brands depending on grid aesthetic, cover-image neglect costs 15-25% of profile-visit-to-follow conversion.
How to avoid: Select or upload a strong cover image for every Reel. Treat it as a feed-post asset.

Hand it off
Stories + Reels production is a daily commitment. EverestX social media managers handle daily Stories cadence + weekly Reels production + grid cohesion as ongoing scope. Engagements $400-1,200/mo at $14-16/hr.

Meta's Instagram API does not allow third-party tools to publish Stories directly. The reminder workflow is the official Meta-supported workaround. No tool does true Story auto-publish — that's a Meta restriction.
Yes — Later supports carousel posts (up to 10 images/videos per post) via direct auto-publish. Compose → upload multiple media → Later assembles into carousel.
Sweet spot for engagement: 15-30 seconds. Under 15s: too short for narrative. Over 60s: drop-off accelerates. 90s max but most performant Reels are 15-30s.
IG Reels algorithm distributes to non-followers heavily (this is why Reels drive top-of-funnel reach). Distribution depends on engagement signals: watch-through rate, shares, saves. Optimize for these metrics, not just likes.
Stories: 24-hour disappearing content, vertical format, used for daily-life updates + driving Linkin.bio clicks + customer engagement (polls, questions). Reels: permanent vertical short-form video, used for top-of-funnel reach + algorithm-driven discovery. Different goals; different content styles.
Later
Later's visual calendar is the reason DTC brands pick this tool. Grid composition, color storytelling, drop-day planning — done right, your feed becomes a recognizable brand-builder. Here's the planning workflow specialists use.
Later
Most brands use the IG bio link to dump 5 links into Linktree and call it done. That's leaving 60-80% of potential conversion on the table. Linkin.bio mirrors your grid — every post becomes its own shoppable destination.
Later
Later auto-publish is reliable when configured right and fragile when something drifts. Here's the diagnostic sequence specialists run when scheduled posts start failing.
Later
Most brands either ignore hashtags or stuff 30 generic ones into every post. Both kill reach. Here's the hashtag strategy specialists use to drive 20-40% more reach without triggering algorithm penalties.
Later
Instagram is the most labor-intensive social network — visual production + cadence + Stories + Reels + DMs + UGC + influencer management. Done well, it's a brand-builder and revenue channel. Done DIY past a certain scale, it eats your week.
