Later auto-publish is reliable when configured right and fragile when something drifts. Here's the diagnostic sequence specialists run when scheduled posts start failing.
Who this is forAnyone whose Later-scheduled posts have stopped publishing or are silently failing. Especially urgent if you're mid-campaign or running paid amplification tied to organic posts.
What you'll need
Step 1
Open the failed post. Later shows a specific error per failure. The error usually names the fix.
Open Later → Calendar → click the failed (red/yellow) post.
Look for the error text. Common formats: 'OAuth token expired,' 'Instagram account is no longer Business,' 'Image dimension exceeded,' 'Caption character limit exceeded,' 'Auto-publish not available for this post type.'
Note the error AND the network. Different networks fail for different reasons.
Multiple posts with same error: systemic (OAuth, account-type). Fix once.
Multiple posts with different errors: content-quality issue. Audit composer drafts.
Step 2
#1 cause of Later IG failures: account silently switched back to Personal. Audit monthly.
Open IG mobile app → Profile → Settings → Account → Account Type.
Confirm 'Business' or 'Creator.' If 'Personal,' switch to Business and re-link to Facebook Page.
Return to Later → Settings → Profiles → reconnect Instagram via Facebook OAuth.
Schedule a test post 5 min ahead to verify.
Step 3
OAuth tokens expire every 60-90 days. Later shows a 'Reconnect' banner but it's easy to miss.
Later → Settings → Profiles → look for any profile with 'Reconnect needed.'
Click 'Reconnect.' Sign in as the same Facebook Page admin (don't switch users).
Grant ALL permissions Later requests. Don't selectively deny.
Key permissions: `pages_show_list`, `pages_read_engagement`, `pages_manage_posts`, `instagram_basic`, `instagram_content_publish`.
Retry failed posts: open each → click 'Retry.'
Calendar a 60-day OAuth audit going forward.
Step 4
IG publishing via Later requires Buffer-connected user to be a FB Page Admin (not Editor or Moderator).
Facebook → your Page → Settings → Page Roles.
Confirm Later-connected user is 'Admin.'
If demoted: regrant Admin role.
Often happens when team members leave or roles are rotated.
After regranting, return to Later and re-test.
Step 5
Out-of-spec media fails silently. Each network has different limits.
Instagram: 1:1, 4:5, or 1.91:1 aspect ratio. <8MB images, <100MB videos. JPG/PNG/MP4.
Pinterest: 2:3 vertical recommended. <32MB images.
TikTok: 9:16 vertical video. 3 sec - 10 min. <287MB. MP4.
Facebook: 1.91:1 or 1:1. <30MB. JPG/PNG.
Stories (any network): 9:16 vertical. <30MB.
Pre-process media to 1:1 (works on most networks) or per-network if you publish often.
Step 6
Story scheduling requires mobile app notifications. If notifications are off, Stories silently fail to publish.
Open Later mobile app → Settings → Notifications. Confirm 'Stories Reminders' is ON.
iOS Settings → Notifications → Later → Banner Style: Persistent. Sounds: ON. Badges: ON.
If iOS Focus modes are active, whitelist Later in each mode you use.
Android: app settings → ensure battery optimization isn't killing Later background processes.
Test: schedule a test Story 5 min ahead. Wait for notification.
If notification doesn't fire: the issue is OS-level, not Later. Reinstall Later mobile app as last resort.
Step 7
Post the same content natively from the IG app. If THAT fails, issue is on the network. If only Later fails, file a Later support ticket.
Open native network app. Compose same post manually. Publish.
If native fails too: issue is on the network side. Check status.fb.com or relevant status page.
If only Later fails: file Later support ticket with screenshots of failed Later post + successful native post.
Later support typical response: 12-48 hours business hours.
Common mistakes
Ignoring expired-OAuth banners
What goes wrong: Yellow Reconnect banners get dismissed. Posts silently fail for weeks. For brands publishing 15 IG posts/week with $5-10K/mo content production, 30-50% of content production gets silently wasted = $1,500-5,000/mo direct cost. For Instagram-led DTC brands, content gaps also cost ad-revenue lift on amplified posts.
How to avoid: Calendar 60-day OAuth audit. Configure email alerts for failures.
IG account drifting to Personal
What goes wrong: Posts queue but Meta API rejects. Sometimes silently. Discovery happens days/weeks later. For brands with $20K/mo IG-driven revenue, IG-publishing outage of 2 weeks costs $10K+ in unrealized revenue.
How to avoid: Monthly audit of IG account type. Train all users with IG access to never switch to Personal.
Disabled mobile notifications for Stories
What goes wrong: Stories silently fail. Scheduled but never published. For brands using Stories to drive Linkin.bio traffic ($2-8K/mo for typical DTC), missing 50% of Stories halves Story-driven revenue trajectory.
How to avoid: Enable Later notifications. Whitelist in iOS Focus modes. Test monthly with a 5-min-ahead Story.
Out-of-spec media
What goes wrong: Posts with wrong aspect ratio, oversized files, or wrong codec fail silently. For brands publishing 20+ posts/week, even a 10% failure rate = 2-3 missed posts/week. Over a quarter: 30+ posts lost = significant content investment wasted.
How to avoid: Standardize media production to network specs. Use 1:1 as safe default for images, 9:16 for video.
No monthly Later hygiene routine
What goes wrong: Failures compound. OAuth expirations stack. IG drifts to Personal. Image specs drift. By the time someone audits, fixing the backlog takes 6-12 hours. Weeks of campaign content sat in failure state.
How to avoid: 10 minutes every Monday. Check Calendar for failures, validate next-week queue, re-auth anything expiring.

Hand it off
Later hygiene is a 10-min/week task. EverestX social media managers handle monthly OAuth audits + failure remediation + media-spec QA as standard scope. Engagements $400-1,200/mo at $14-16/hr.

Different networks have different API requirements. IG (via Meta) is the most fragile and has the strictest content rules. Pinterest's API is more permissive. Diagnose per network when one works but another doesn't.
You may have tapped the notification but exited IG before completing the Story publish. Or IG was in a temporary outage at that exact second. Retry: open Later → find the failed Story → re-schedule.
Proactively every 60 days. Reactively whenever Later shows a Reconnect banner. Don't wait for failures to start.
Edge case: the post published successfully but Later didn't receive the success confirmation from IG's API (network latency, API timeout). The post is live; Later just doesn't know it. Don't republish — that'll create a duplicate. Mark the Later post as complete manually.
Yes. Later → Settings → Notifications → enable email alerts for publishing failures. Set up an email filter to route them to a high-attention folder.
Later
Later is the most opinionated visual scheduler on the market. Done right, your Instagram grid plans itself and Linkin.bio drives meaningful traffic. Done wrong, you'll burn an afternoon on IG Business-account confusion. Here's the clean install path.
Later
Stories and Reels are where IG engagement actually lives in 2026 — and where most scheduling tools fall down. Here's the Later workflow that handles both formats reliably.
Buffer
Buffer + Instagram is the most fragile pairing in social scheduling, mostly because Meta tightens API rules every quarter. Here's the diagnostic sequence specialists run when scheduled IG posts start failing.
Hootsuite
A scheduled post fails. The next one fails. Suddenly half your queue is red and a campaign is going off the rails. Here's the diagnostic sequence specialists run — in order, fastest-to-fix first.
Later
Instagram is the most labor-intensive social network — visual production + cadence + Stories + Reels + DMs + UGC + influencer management. Done well, it's a brand-builder and revenue channel. Done DIY past a certain scale, it eats your week.
