There are four ways to get marketing done, and they cost wildly different amounts for the same output. This index compares the all-in annual cost of each model — in-house full-time, freelancer, agency retainer, and managed remote talent — in 2026, across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
Methodology
In-house "all-in" cost = base salary + benefits + employer payroll tax + 401k/pension + PTO (≈ 1.4–1.5× base). Agency figures are typical single-channel retainer ranges. Managed-remote = a full-time vetted specialist via EverestX at $10–12/hr ($1,700–$2,100/month). Figures are ranges by role, seniority, and city. Part 1 · The Four Models
In-house vs freelance vs agency vs managed.
| Model | All-in annual cost | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-house full-time | $80,000–$130,000+ (all-in) | Deep context, full control | Highest cost, slow to hire, fixed overhead, turnover risk |
| Freelancer / marketplace | $15,000–$60,000+ (variable) | Flexible, fast to start | Quality lottery, churn, management overhead, no accountability |
| Agency retainer | $30,000–$144,000+ | Breadth, managed delivery | Shared/junior staff, agency margin, long lock-ins, least cost-efficient |
| Managed remote talent | ~$20,000 (≈ $1,700/mo full-time) | Dedicated specialist, vetted, 48-hour match, no fees, replacement guarantee | Remote-first (needs async-friendly process) |
"The same SEO or paid-media work can cost a company $100,000 a year through an in-house hire or agency, or about $20,000 through a dedicated remote specialist. The output is comparable; the overhead is not."
